Tshephisho Somo joined VDH in October 2025, bringing an exceptional academic background and extensive experience in legal research, policy analysis and complex legal writing. Her career has included work at the Constitutional Court, academia, corporate and commercial practice, and regulatory advisory work, giving her a particularly strong foundation in legal analysis and written advocacy.

Biography

Tshephisho Mokone Somo holds an LLB from the University of Pretoria, an LLM in Extractive Industry Law in Africa, and an MSc in International Mineral Resources Management from the University of Dundee in Scotland. She was admitted as an attorney in 2019 and joined VDH Attorneys Incorporated in 2025.

Her academic achievements include receiving the FirstRand Laurie Dippenaar Scholarship, winning the South African Law Reform Essay Writing Competition, and being recognised as a top achiever during her postgraduate studies.

Tshephisho’s professional experience spans private practice, the public sector, legal research and academia. Before joining VDH, much of her post-articles experience was academically focused. She served as Senior Legal Researcher to then Deputy Chief Justice Maya and Acting Justice Unterhalter at the Constitutional Court of South Africa, where she conducted research on complex legal questions, prepared legal opinions and seminar notes, and acted as lead researcher on matters before the Court. She has also worked as a legal researcher and academic associate at the University of Pretoria and has experience in corporate-commercial and advisory roles in South Africa and internationally.

At VDH, Tshephisho’s practice focuses on debt review litigation, including court appearances and the drafting of legal documents. She is based in Pretoria and currently appears predominantly in Gauteng courts, with particular experience in the Pretoria North Magistrates’ Court.

Her strong research background has translated naturally into an interest in some of the more difficult questions arising from the practical application of debt review law. She is particularly interested in the rationale and consequences of excluding a credit agreement from the debt review process where a consumer has nevertheless been found to be over-indebted, and the extent to which such outcomes may undermine the rehabilitative purpose of debt review.

Tshephisho speaks Sepedi, English and Afrikaans. She has also studied Korean and is currently learning Mandarin.

Outside of practice, she is an enthusiastic reader and writer and has written two novels under a pen name. She also enjoys learning languages, analysing anime and, by her own account, composing songs about her dog.

Our Attorneys

The People Behind the Process

VDH's legal team brings together attorneys with extensive experience in debt review litigation, court appearances, opposed proceedings, legal research, regulatory matters and the practical application of the National Credit Act.

Our attorneys operate across the Western Cape, Gauteng and Limpopo and are supported by specialised litigation, court-management and administrative teams.

Some members of the firm have spent the majority of their legal careers working in debt review. Others bring experience from general litigation, prosecution, the Magistracy, advocacy, regulatory work and other areas of legal practice.

That combination is deliberate.

Debt review litigation does not happen in isolation. It requires an understanding of civil procedure, consumer-credit law, evidence, enforcement, court practice and the practical financial circumstances underlying each application.

Careers

Build a Career in Specialist Litigation

VDH operates at the intersection of law, litigation, technology and legal process design built around a specialist field.

For attorneys, candidate attorneys and legal professionals, that creates an environment very different from a traditional general practice.

Our team works with high volumes of litigation, but the work is not simply administrative. Attorneys are exposed to court appearances, opposed matters, developing questions under the National Credit Act, legal research, drafting, negotiation and the practical challenges that arise when legislation is applied across courts throughout South Africa.

We are particularly suited to people who are:

  • intellectually curious;

  • practical problem-solvers;

  • comfortable taking responsibility;

  • interested in litigation and legal argument;

  • willing to question inefficient processes;

  • able to work accurately at scale; and

  • committed to maintaining professional standards in a highly specialised practice.

  •

VDH has grown by developing people internally and giving talented individuals the opportunity to take ownership of meaningful work.

If specialist litigation, legal technology and the continuing development of South African debt review law interest you, we would like to hear from you.
